    What is a home page?

It is the first screen that most people will jump to when they visit your Internet address. It usually provides information about your company and a directory to any other pages in your web site - similar to a full page ad in a magazine.

    What is a web site?

A web site can be a lot of different things but generally it's the concept of what you are doing on the Internet. Some web sites consist of a home page and an E-mail link back to the sponsoring organization. Other sites consist of literally hundreds of pages that have thousands of internal and external links. It can be as simple as having a small paragraph describing your company - to having full-color graphics to go along with your merchandise catalog, or perhaps even having real-time audio and video clips!

    What is a link?

You move around the Internet through links. Internal links jump to someplace else in a specific web site. External links go to other places on the Internet. It's amazing but true: a link can take you to the next page or literally around the world.

    What is a domain name?

Your Internet address is unique and should be stable. If part of your name is the name of the company that provides your Internet service, your address is dependent upon their survival. If they go out of business or change the terms of your service in a way that you don't like, you must pursue new avenues.

You can't move to another service provider without changing your address. The people that know your old address won't be able to find you very easily. If you are in business you need to have a domain name, or be branched off of a stable existing domain name. It is a specific name that identifies your company and is apart and different from any network name. For example our Internet address is "avwebguide.com." That domain name is registered and no one else can have it. We have a great service provider but if something should ever happen to them we could simply move our information to another server. With a simple E-mail message to the registration agency for the Internet and we would be back in business, and our clients web address sites would remain the same. Without a domain name we would have lost all the contacts that had known us at the old server's address. Having your own unique domain name is a wise choice, especially for large corporations with long-term/permanent web sites.

How can I most effectively use the Internet to promote my business?

That depends on your business. Some companies need little more than a simple page that says who they are and what they do. Other companies might want to put their entire catalog on the Internet. The trick is to be sure that you are using the Internet as effectively as possible.

      (1) How do we do that?
First you need to create a web site and make some decisions about what you want it to do for you, and fill your web site with the graphics, information and links that will allow your clients and potential clients to gain all that you have to offer (similar to magazine layout).

      (2) Is that enough?
No - you also need to let people know that your web site exists and promote it.

      (3) How do we do that?

You make sure that all of your regular advertising contains your Internet address. This includes your brochures, yellow pages, and advertising. In addition you need to be sure that you are listed in as many Internet directories and catalogs as possible, which we can do for you. Our Internet Marketing group will promote your site so that you get the maximum results from your web site. Let us talk to you about the possibilities!

    Glossary of Terms

URL - Universal Resource Locator, A web pages address

Virtual Domain Name - http://www.YOUR_NAME.com - that points to a web server and makes it appear to be your own. Usually it is the web hosting company that actually owns the server, but many companies own their own servers and have direct connections to the WWW. They have true domains.

Banner - Also called an "ad-banner"; or "in-line ad." A graphic image linked to a sponsor's site.

Hits - The number of machine hits required to construct a page. Example: a page with 5 images and text is equal to 6 hits, 5 for graphics and one for text. Essentially, each file used to build the page that is served is counted as a hit. Most people use the term "hit" interchangably with impression however.
